By the time a child is 30 months ( 2.5 years old), they reach half their adult height. Thus, you can tell vaguely how tall your child would be as an adult by that time. Kids gain about 2 KGs of weight every year from the age of two till they hit puberty. They usually grow eight cm taller by the time they are three and an additional 7 cm by the time they are 4. Here is a ready reference children weight chart for your preschooler. If your baby is two years old, now is the time you would ideally start thinking about potty training them. And for potty training, you need the best potty training pants for your baby to achieve this milestone with ease and comfort.

How Are Babies Measured
It is the same whether you refer to the length of a baby still in a lying down position or the height of a baby who can stand up still. Babies are measured from the top of their heads to the tip of their toes. So your paediatrician would track the height/length of the baby along with their weight and head circumference closely during every checkup and track in a chart provided to you at birth. This ensures that any anomalies or concerns are identified and addressed in time.
You will need to measure the length and height of your baby from time to time. Let us keep track of their growth with this super fun & attractive Height & Weight Tracker. It’s FREE, and it’s downloadable!
Factors Affecting Height and Weight
The most significant factor determining your baby height and weight are the genes that you and your partner pass on to them. But several other factors affect them. (2)
1 ▪ Gestation Age At Birth – The initial weight and length of a baby also depend on the birth time. Premature babies are on the smaller side, while babies born post-term are on the heavier side at birth.
2 ▪ Hormones – If your child has any hormonal imbalance, e.g. low Thyroid levels, this can result in slower growth and thus lesser than the average height and length of the baby. Sometimes hormones of the mother while expecting a baby also affects the baby. Therefore, it is crucial to get these checked up from time to time and take medication timely during pregnancy if required.
3 ▪ Mother Pregnancy Health – Factors like smoking or consuming alcohol during pregnancy, gestational diabetes, weight gain during pregnancy, activity level etc., of the expecting mother also impact the baby growth while inside the womb.
4 ▪ Breastfed Vs. Formula Fed – Although this is no measure of their overall health, in the first year, formula-fed babies gain more weight than exclusively breastfed babies. However, there is no significant difference once they are solids and animal milk.
5 ▪ Sleep – Studies show that uninterrupted and sound sleep helps kids grow better. Thus kids who sleep well vs kids who have restless and disturbed sleep might have a bit of difference in their height and weight. You can try swaddling your baby in SuperBottoms Mulmul Swaddles for comfortable and uninterrupted sleep.
What If Baby Growth Patterns Have A Sudden Change?
If suddenly, for no known reason, your baby weight or height growth slows down, or if your baby is not gaining weight or losing weight, or if there is a sudden spurt of height or weight growth, this needs to be brought to the notice of your baby paediatrician immediately. This might not be a reason for concern and might be a growth spurt. But when it comes to babies, it is always better to know and act in time.
What Do Growth Chart Percentile Mean
The WHO provided length and baby weight chart for babies up to the age of one year is shown in percentile instead of an average. This covers the data of many kids of the same age and sex in different geographical regions. Thus, the percentile system shows the whole range in which a child can fall at a particular age and sex. Therefore, your child is perfectly fit even if they are on the chart lowest or highest percentile.
What If Your Baby Height and Weight Are Not In Percentile Range
As mentioned in the above section, the chart with percentile is the data collected for newborn babies of the same age and sex averaged out. At times some children do not fall in the range. They may be below the 10th percentile or above the 90th percentile. This depends on many other factors also, like genetics and height and weight of the parents etc. If your child is below the 10th percentile or above the 90th percentile, it is advised to bring this to the notice of a pediatrician so that any required actions can be taken timely.
No two kids are ever the same! This applies when it comes to the height and weight of your baby too. Do not compare them with other kids their age. As we read in this article, many factors affect the growth of each child, and each one of them can have a different build.
Some Questions Parents Frequently Ask (FAQs):-
Q1. My baby is on a leaner side. How do I help them gain weight?
Ans. The weight and build of a child depend on many factors, the food intake being just one of those factors. If your baby is active, poop/pee count and consistency are OK, then you should be worried about nothing.
Q2. I am not gaining too much weight in my pregnancy. Will my child be underweight at birth?
Ans. This might not necessarily be true. During your ultrasound, if the baby growth is showing fine, even if the mother is not gaining weight, the baby could be healthy during birth. During pregnancy, slow weight gain for a mother could also mean that she is not gaining fat or is losing fat, but the baby is growing well and getting the required nutrition.
Q3. Does the same growth chart apply in the case of premature babies?
Ans. Yes, the same growth baby height and weight chart applies in the case of premature babies as well. However, as premature babies are born before the term, in their case, month zero is considered the actual date of a full-term pregnancy.
